Metal Myths Debunked

  • Metal does not increase the incidence of lightning strike.  Moreover, it is not flammable and will therefore prevent fire in the event that lightning does hit your roof.
  • Metal roofs are not susceptible to rust.  Metal roofs are are coated with either zinc or zinc and aluminum that prevents rust and protects the color of your metal roof.
  • Metal roofs are not any more noisy during rain or hail storms and if installed properly on solid sheathing.  They are no more or less noisy than any other material.
  • Metal roofs are not susceptible to dents caused by hail, high winds or bad weather in general.  Most metal roofs are built to withstand winds up to 150 mph, which is equal to winds from an F2 tornado.

Standing seam metal roofs may be the best choice for new construction or existing construction roofs.  Although metal typically costs more than single-ply or shingled roofs, it often last longer than other materials too.  In addition to durability, many favor the style, color and finish provided by a metal roof.  For those who prefer the look of shingle, clay tile, cedar shake or slate roofs, there are metal options that look just like them, but may last much longer.  Similar to white single-ply roofs, metal of all colors reflects heat thereby reducing cooling costs during the summer while providing insulation during the winter and reducing energy costs overall.
